ISLAMABAD: Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian emphasized on Monday that Iran respects Pakistan’s sovereignty, asserting that no one will be allowed to threaten the common security of the two countries.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Pakistani Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani, Amir-Abdollahian highlighted the deep cultural ties between Iran and Pakistan, noting that the two nations have never had a territorial conflict.
The Iranian minister stated that both countries are committed to preventing terrorists from exploiting opportunities to advance their goals. He acknowledged the significant losses both nations have suffered due to terrorism and underscored the importance of increased cooperation on border security.
Jilani reciprocated the sentiments, emphasizing the deep ties between Iran and Pakistan based on brotherhood. He described the detailed talks between the two foreign ministers as marked by convergence on all issues of mutual interest.
Jilani emphasized the necessity of close ties for the development of the people of both countries and regional stability. The two countries expressed a commitment to expanding their cooperation.
Amir-Abdollahian’s visit to Islamabad comes after recent tensions between Iran and Pakistan, which included exchanges of airstrikes. The Iranian foreign minister’s visit, organized on Jilani’s invitation, signals a normalization of ties following a period of strain.
Earlier, Iran had conducted missile strikes in Balochistan, leading to Pakistan expelling the Iranian ambassador, recalling its envoy, and launching retaliatory strikes into Iranian territory.
Diplomatic engagement has since helped ease tensions, with both countries reappointing their ambassadors. The visit marks a step towards restoring stability in the relationship between Iran and Pakistan.
