Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, the representative for Asia in the Committee of Human Rights for Parliamentarians (CHRP) of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), has achieved another milestone by being unanimously elected as the Vice President of the Committee during its recent meeting in Geneva.
This historic appointment marks a significant achievement for Senator Mushahid, making him the first parliamentarian from Pakistan to hold a high-ranking office within a key body of the IPU, a global organization that serves as a platform for parliamentary cooperation worldwide.
His active engagement in international parliamentary forums was underscored two years ago when he was elected as a member of the CHRP during the IPU General Assembly in Rwanda.
Senator Mushahid Hussain has a distinguished record in human rights advocacy, having served as the Leader of the Pakistan Delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva.

In the year 2000, Senator Mushahid Hussain gained international recognition when he was declared a ‘Prisoner of Conscience’ by Amnesty International due to his unjust detention without charges for 440 days.
He was the only Pakistani political prisoner to receive this honor at the time. Beyond his role in the CHRP, Senator Mushahid is also the convenor of the Pakistan Parliamentary Forum on PKR (Palestine, Kashmir, and Rohingya) and holds a position on the Executive Board of the Istanbul-based ‘Al Quds Parliament,’ where he actively supports the Palestine Cause. His election as Vice President of the CHRP further enhances Pakistan’s representation and influence in crucial international human rights forums.
