Cipher case
Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, and his associate Shah Mahmood Qureshi reportedly displayed visible frustration in front of Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain during a recent session at the special court. The court is currently overseeing the cipher case involving the PTI leaders, who are facing charges of leaking state secrets under the Official Secrets Act and other applicable laws. All hearings have been taking place within the confines of Adiala jail.
During the most recent session, the absence of defense lawyers when Judge Hasnat initiated proceedings drew noticeable displeasure. In response, the judge issued a warning, marking the third such instance in this particular case.
The tension escalated when Shah Mahmood Qureshi seized a file from the state defense counsel and forcefully threw it against the wall, attempting to instigate a confrontation with the judge. Judge Hasnat promptly reprimanded Qureshi for his disruptive behavior. Imran Khan also joined in, employing strong language directed at the judge during this heated exchange.
The repeated absence of legal representatives for both Khan and Qureshi in previous hearings prompted Judge Hasnat to reach out to the High Court. Consequently, the High Court provided state counsel to represent the accused individuals.
The ongoing tumultuous proceedings highlight the heightened emotions surrounding the case, with clashes between the accused and the judiciary casting a shadow over the trial’s decorum and legal process. The next steps in the trial remain uncertain as the courtroom dynamics continue to be strained.
