Custodial Death
KARACHI: In response to the unfortunate custodial death of a suspect, the Karachi police have taken swift action by suspending a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and a Station House Officer (SHO) from the Special Investigation Unit (SIU). The suspended officials have been identified as DSP Saeed Ahmed Rind and SHO Syed Atique Hussain Shah. This decision comes pending a departmental inquiry into their conduct.
The Karachi police issued directives for the immediate suspension of DSP Saeed Ahmed Rind and SHO Syed Atique Hussain Shah, as announced by the spokesperson for Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ahmed Nawaz Cheema.
The suspect, identified as Nizamuddin, died in police custody on January 13. The incident prompted an inquiry led by Cheema, who disclosed that the suspect was apprehended on January 12 in Manghopir on charges of extortion. The suspect was brought to the SIU police station for investigation, and a case was registered against him under relevant sections of the Pakistan Penal Code.
During the investigation, the suspect passed away, and his body was discovered near his home in Manghopir. The statement revealed that the SIU’s former assistant sub-inspector, Sajid, and constable Shadab have been arrested, and efforts are underway to apprehend assistant sub-inspector Aqeel and a private individual.
CIA DIG Cheema stated that Karachi Additional Inspector General Khadim Hussain Rind suspended the SIU DSP and SHO following the inquiry report. Responding to questions about the handling of the suspect’s body, Cheema explained that the police left the body in Manghopir for the relatives to retrieve.
Police surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed emphasized that the cause of death will be confirmed after receiving sample results. She reported that there were no apparent signs of violence, and samples have been taken for chemical analysis and histopathology.
The Karachi police are committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in this matter, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
