Justice Ijazul Ahsan
ISLAMABAD: In a surprising turn of events, the Senior Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, has tendered his resignation, following in the footsteps of his colleague Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, citing sources.
Sources reveal that Justice Ijazul Ahsan’s decision to resign came in the wake of Justice Naqvi’s earlier resignation from the senior Supreme Court judge position. According to insiders, Justice Ahsan has formally submitted his resignation to President Arif Alvi. Notably, he held the position of the third most senior judge in the Supreme Court and was slated to ascend to the role of Chief Justice of Pakistan in October 2024.
The abrupt resignations have added a layer of complexity to the unfolding situation, with Justice Ahsan having opposed the proceedings against Justice Naqvi. Reports indicate that he did not participate in the Supreme Judicial Council meeting today, further emphasizing the internal dynamics within the judiciary.
Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, who faced allegations of ‘misconduct’ before the Supreme Judicial Council, had earlier sent his resignation to President Arif Alvi. In his resignation letter, Justice Naqvi expressed gratitude for his tenure as a Lahore High Court and Supreme Court judge but cited an inability to continue discharging his duties.
President Arif Alvi subsequently accepted Justice Naqvi’s resignation. The dual resignations of senior judges have sent shockwaves through the legal and political circles, prompting questions about the circumstances surrounding these departures and their potential implications for the judiciary’s stability. As the legal community awaits further developments, concerns about the succession plan for the Chief Justice position and the broader impact on the judiciary linger.
