Karachi Shivers as Coldest Night of 2024 Grips the City

Coldest Night

Karachi experienced its coldest night of the winter season, as temperatures dropped to 12 degrees Celsius. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts continued cold and dry weather in the city for the next 24 hours. According to the Met Office, temperatures are anticipated to reach as low as 10°C to 12°C in the upcoming days, while the maximum temperature may rise between 25°C to 27°C.

Humidity was reported at 60%, and northeast winds blew at a speed of three kilometers per hour. Chief meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz mentioned that the minimum temperature this winter season was recorded at 11.5°C in December. Comparing to last year’s January 14, when the temperature dropped to 6°C in Karachi, this winter is relatively milder.

Sarfaraz noted that the cold spell might intensify in the next three to four days, with temperatures potentially reaching a minimum of 10°C. The chilly weather is expected to persist for the next two to three weeks.

Despite the current cold spell, Sarfaraz stated that the overall winter weather this year is not as severe. Meanwhile, in a recent report by the EU’s climate service, the year 2023 has officially been declared the hottest on record, surpassing previous temperatures by approximately 1.48°C.

Human-induced climate change and the El Niño weather phenomenon played significant roles in this unprecedented warmth, resulting in consistent new highs in global air and sea surface temperatures from July onward.
