PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court has ordered Pakistan’s top electoral authority to announce its decision on the petitions against the intra-party elections and the allotment of election symbols by December 22.
The court reserved its decision after a bench consisting of two judges heard the case, which was brought by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). PTI Chairman, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, argued that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) did not provide reasons for not allotting the election symbol.
The court questioned why the PTI lawyer did not approach the Islamabad High Court, to which Barrister Gohar replied that the announcement for PTI’s intra-party election was made from Peshawar. The court is expected to issue its decision before December 22.
PTI Takes Legal Action, Challenges Nomination Papers Seizure in Lahore High Court
In another development, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has challenged the alleged seizure of nomination papers by the police in the Lahore High Court. The petition, filed by Umair Niazi, names the inspector general of police and others as parties in the case.
The petition argues that preventing individuals from contesting elections is a violation of the Constitution and requests the court to take action against those responsible for the alleged theft of nomination papers. PTI demands that the court intervene to stop any harassment of its leaders.
In response to the alleged seizure of nomination papers and concerns about a lack of a level playing field, the PTI has decided to approach the Election Commission of Pakistan.
PTI leaders, including Umair Niazi’s father and PTI Chairman Gohar Khan, have claimed that nomination papers were confiscated from party members. Taimur Ali Jhagra, another PTI leader, expressed similar concerns about not having a level playing field.
