Trains Collision in Sheikhupura: Over 20 People Injured in Accident

Trains Collision

SHEIKHUPURA: In the most recent train collision, two trains collided near Qila Sattar Shah Station in Punjab’s Sheikhupura district, injuring at least 20 passengers on Sunday.

Sources reported that a Lahore-bound passenger train from Mianwali collided with a freight train on the same track, despite the train driver’s attempt to avoid the crash.

Rescue personnel confirmed that 20 passengers on the train sustained injuries, with five of them transferred to the district headquarters hospital.

Railway officials initiated rescue efforts and launched an investigation into the collision.

A railways spokesperson reported that train operations in the Lahore division ran smoothly after the accident, and they cleared the track by 7:30 am.

The Mianwali Express was dispatched, ensuring the safety of all passengers onboard. It’s worth noting that a day earlier, four bogies of a freight train had derailed near the same railway station.

Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the incident and called for action against those responsible.

Train accidents are common on Pakistan’s deteriorating rail system, and governments have sought funds for rail network upgrades under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Over the past decade, the country has witnessed several deadly train accidents, which have increased in frequency in recent years.

In August this year, a derailment near Sahara Railway Station resulted in 56 deaths and a dozen injuries, prompting the suspension of six railways officials due to negligence, as stated by then-Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique in the National Assembly.
