ISLAMABAD: On Friday, the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad ordered the placement of former Punjab chief minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi in Adiala jail on judicial remand.
After completing a two-day physical remand in the judicial complex attack case, the PTI president appeared before ATC judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain’s court.
During the hearing, the police requested an additional 10-day physical remand for the former Punjab chief minister. The ATC judge denied their request.
Instead, the court rejected the police’s request and placed PTI President Elahi on 14-day judicial remand in Adiala jail.
Shortly after his release by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on September 1, Elahi faced arrest. This arrest came as a result of a prior restriction imposed by the Lahore High Court (LHC), which had prevented his apprehension on the same day.
Authorities filed a case against Pervaiz Elahi at CTD police station on September 3. The FIR levels accusations against the former CM, alleging that he dispatched rioters to Islamabad to vandalize the Judicial Complex. Additionally, it claims that he provided them with vehicles and batons for this purpose.
It’s worth noting that authorities have arrested and detained the former CM multiple times since the May 9 riots.
President Dr. Alvi Completes His Five-Year Term Today
Meanwhile, It’s worth noting that the completion of his tenure doesn’t automatically result in his removal from office. Article 44(1) allows him to remain in office until a successor is duly elected.
However, the process of electing a successor faces some unique challenges. The electoral college for this purpose comprises the national and provincial assemblies, which are no longer in existence.
In the event that President Alvi decides to resign, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani would step in to fulfill the presidential duties until a new president is chosen. Should such a resignation occur, it would be submitted to the speaker of the National Assembly.
