Physical Remand
ISLAMABAD: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) approved a two-day physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Chaudhry Parvez Elahi in a case related to an attack on Judicial Complex Islamabad. The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) police took him into custody following the ATC’s verdict.
During the ATC proceedings, Parvez Elahi’s lawyer, Ali Bukhari, argued that the police’s request for physical remand did not mention the need for interrogation and questioned what the investigating officer had done in the past 24 hours.
The defense emphasized that there was no need for a probe against Parvez Elahi, given his well-known identity in the country.
The prosecutor argued that Islamabad police required Elahi in a case filed in March, citing the need to collect evidence and stating that the informant implicated Parvez Elahi in the attack on the judicial complex.
Parvez Elahi’s counsel filed a contempt of court petition against his client’s arrest in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
Previously, the IHC had suspended Elahi’s detention under 3-MPO (Maintenance of Public Order) and ordered his release by the Islamabad police.
The Islamabad police rearrested him in a case related to the attack on the Judicial Complex in Islamabad on March 18.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) issued a contempt of court notice to Islamabad’s chief commissioner for not complying with the high court’s orders to present PTI President Chaudhry Parvez Elahi before the court.
The LHC expressed displeasure over the failure to implement its orders and questioned why Elahi was arrested and transferred to Attock Jail despite the court’s order. The LHC directed the Islamabad chief commissioner to respond within 7 days.
