Parvez Elahi’s Release Doesn’t Last Long: Immediate Re-Arrest After LHC’s Decision

Re-arrest

The Lahore High Court (LHC) instructed an inquiry into Parvez Elahi’s arrest for violating court orders. The Islamabad Police arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Parvez Elahi on Canal Road in Lahore while he was heading home following court orders. The police arrested him under the 3MPO (Maintenance of Public Order) Ordinance.

Earlier today, the LHC ordered the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to release Elahi and prevent his arrest in any ongoing or future cases.

This decision came during a hearing presided over by Justice Amjad Rafiq at the LHC, where a petition challenged NAB’s arrest of Elahi in a case involving alleged bribes/kickbacks for securing contracts related to road schemes in Gujrat Highways Division.

After the hearing, Parvez Elahi criticized the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), blaming them for economic troubles during their rule and accusing them of fleeing to London during challenging times. He also mentioned the International Monetary Fund (IMF) suggesting elections.

During the proceedings, the court ordered NAB to re-arrest Chaudhry Parvez Elahi within one hour. Following the order, NAB Lahore chapter presented him before the court with tight security measures.

Justice Amjad Rafiq questioned the NAB prosecutor about the status of the intra-court appeal, to which the prosecutor claimed ignorance. In response, Justice Amjad Rafiq ordered a thorough inquiry and the release of Parvez Elahi.

The NAB lawyer expressed readiness to present Parvez Elahi but cited threats to his life and lack of cooperation from the Punjab Government regarding security matters.

Justice Amjad Rafiq expressed concern and instructed that Parvez Elahi should be here in court within one hour if the government failed to cooperate with NAB, with the option of issuing an arrest warrant by the Director-General of NAB if necessary.
