ISLAMABAD: On Monday, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) approved the police’s request for the physical remand of several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Yasmin Rashid, in various cases related to the May 9 riots. This decision followed the inclusion of new charges of mutiny and waging a war in the FIRs.
Judge Ejaz Ahmad Buttar granted the police a three-day physical remand for PTI-Punjab president Dr Yasmin Rashid, former senior provincial minister Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, Senator Ijaz Chaudhry, and five others once again. This is in relation to the case involving an attack on the Shadman police station.
May 9 Case Updates: New Charges, Remands, and Imran Khan’s Status
During the hearing, the investigation officer asserted that Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, and Senator Ejaz Chaudhry were actively involved in the mutiny.
The police have added new charges of mutiny, waging a war, and riots to the first information reports (FIRs), the investigation officer further revealed.
Simultaneously, Judge Ejaz Ahmad Buttar also approved a three-day physical remand for 68 suspects, including fashion designer Khadija Shah, former MNA Alia Hamza, and activists Sanam Javed and Tayyaba Raja. This pertains to the attack on the Corpse Commander’s house.
The investigating officer informed the court that the prosecution department had received the challan against the suspects for scrutiny.
In all the May 9 cases, the police have introduced new charges under sections 121 (waging or attempting to wage war or abetting in waging war against Pakistan), 131 (abetting mutiny), and 146 (rioting) in the FIRs.
Previously, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) had granted permission for the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan in cases linked to the May 9 riots.
The DIG investigation had submitted a plea to authorize the arrest of the PTI chief in the Jinnah House attack case.
The court was informed that the PTI leader had been convicted under the Election Act and was presently in custody.
The ATC had accepted the plea, granting the police the authority to conduct an inquiry and effect the arrest in the Jinnah House attack case.
According to police sources, an investigation team would be dispatched to Attock jail to conduct the inquiry with the PTI chief.
Furthermore, sources added that the complete report would be submitted to the court, but the arrest of the PTI chairman would be postponed.
May 9 Incidents
The arrest of the former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday sparked violent clashes across Pakistan.
Protests erupted in both remote and major cities as party workers were incensed by their chairman’s arrest. Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad all called upon the armed forces to maintain law and order.
During a PTI worker protest, there were attacks on Army installations and the Corps Commander’s house in Lahore.
Notably, PTI Chairman Khan had been apprehended from his Lahore residence on August 5 following his conviction in the Toshakhana criminal case, which resulted in a five-year disqualification and a three-year prison term.
