ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani said the next general elections would occur the schedule right after the completion of the delimitation process based on the new census data.

However, the Senate chairman, said that the PDM coalition government, consisting of various political parties, had collectively made decisions regarding this matter.

Recalling that the previous coalition government in the Council of Common Interests had approved the 2023 census with the awareness of the constitutional necessity to delimit electoral constituencies based on updated data, Sanjrani added that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would conduct constituency delimitation using the fresh census information.

Upon completion of the delimitation exercise, the ECP would announce the forthcoming general election’s date, he asserted. Sanjrani reiterated his confidence that the general elections would occur as planned.

Sanjrani emphasized that the ECP would be responsible for conducting the elections, and he urged the nation to remain satisfied.

During the caretaker government’s tenure, the Upper House of parliament, representing all federating units, will continue functioning to ensure the rights of all four provinces, Sanjrani affirmed.

chairman’s Senate response regarding the presidential election

Meanwhile, in response to a question about the presidential election, Sanjrani said that although President Dr. Arif Alvi’s term would conclude on September 9, the Constitution allows for the outgoing president to continue until the new president is elected.

He further explained that following the general elections, the electoral college for the presidential election would form with the establishment of the National and provincial assemblies. Consequently, the election for the next president would take place subsequently.

Addressing Balochistan, when questioned, Sanjrani highlighted that the vast province required significant funding for development work. He noted that numerous major development projects were completed in the province, and ongoing schemes were progressing well. Sanjrani observed that the province’s progress was on the right track.

Furthermore, he asserted that the nomination of the caretaker prime minister from Balochistan was an additional initiative aimed at reducing the sense of deprivation among the province’s population.
