Interim Prime Minister Kakar compares 9 May violence with ‘AIDS’

ISLAMABAD: In his inaugural address to the cabinet, Anwaarul Haq Kakar, the Interim Prime Minister, drew a parallel between the violence that occurred on May 9 and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). He depicted state buildings and military installations as the country’s ‘immune system.’

Following the arrest of PTI leader Imran Khan on May 9, violent protests erupted across the country. There were attacks on state buildings and military installations after Khan was apprehended by paramilitary forces from the premises of the Islamabad High Court.

Interim PM Anwaarul Haq Kakar strongly condemned the May 9 violence and asserted a firm commitment to ensuring justice. He emphasized that individuals who violated laws during those days will be subject to suitable legal consequences.

Reflecting on the events of May 9, Kakar conveyed his sense of disappointment and discomfort. He drew an analogy with the emergence of AIDS, which attacks the body’s immune system, highlighting the vulnerability of any system when its core elements are targeted, as was the case with the state’s symbols and emblems during the May 9 incident.

While the PTI and the broader political community condemned the attack, the previous government accused PTI leaders of instigating supporters to engage in such demonstrations. Several PTI members distanced themselves from the party after the incident. Besides this, the government apprehended numerous individuals involved in these activities.

Kakar also addressed the Kashmir issue during his talk and reaffirmed continued support for the cause. Addressing Pakistan’s core issue of Kashmir, Kakar underscored its deep-rooted significance, extending beyond memory to the essence of the nation. He characterized Kashmir as an eternal concern that resides within the very soul of Pakistan.
