PTI rejects an ECP decision on delimitation, set to challenge CCI decision in the Supreme Court

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) rejected the decision made by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to conduct a new delimitation and declared its intention to challenge the Council of Common Interest’s (CCI) decision to implement the new census notification in the Supreme Court.

In an official statement, a spokesperson for the party accused the ECP of pursuing a “malicious and clear deviation from the Constitution” through the issued delimitation schedule.

The PTI stressed that if the National Assembly is dissolved prior to the completion of its term, the Constitution explicitly mandates the ECP to organize elections within a 90-day period.

The party’s spokesperson criticized the Election Commission’s schedule as an “unlawful attempt” to prolong the caretaker government, contrary to the Constitutional provisions. The spokesperson further asserted that the Election Commission, having already violated the Supreme Court’s directives regarding elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), was once again attempting to “disregard the Constitution.”

In response to the Council of Common Interest’s decision, the PTI contended that the establishment of new constituencies cannot be employed as a pretext to evade holding elections, emphasizing that this constitutes a “major irregularity.”

Furthermore, the party alleged that “illegal caretaker chief ministers of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” were present at the CCI meeting, which it deemed an infringement.

The PTI also claimed that due to its increasing popularity, citizens were being denied their right to vote.
