ISLAMABAD: In response to the rain and thunderstorms forecast issued by the meteorological office, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an advisory alert to all relevant federal and provincial departments, urging them to ensure readiness for potential disasters.
As per the Meteorological Department, multiple regions of the country are anticipated to undergo thundershowers. These could potentially lead to flooding, landslides, and other associated hazards.
While the weather is anticipated to remain hot and humid. There is a likelihood of intermittent light rain along the coastal areas of Sindh. The advisory from NDMA specifically highlights the potential risks of these upcoming rains, particularly in the hilly regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab, and Azad Kashmir.
Moreover, the NDMA has highlighted that the anticipated heavy rains might lead to an increase in water levels in rivers. With the potential for urban flooding, authorities are stressing the importance of preparedness.
The NDMA is also focusing on Gilgit-Baltistan, as the region’s rivers and streams are expected to experience heightened water flow. The authority suggests that this situation might open up additional opportunities for the region. It could potentially signify increased water resources or even economic benefits.
150 People Perished, 230 Suffered Injuries In Tormenting Rains Across Pakistan, Says NDMA
Previously, at least 150 people perished in the recent nationwide tormenting rains while 230 suffered injuries.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) disclosed this in its report released on Wednesday. The report highlighted the recent monsoon rains-related facilities across Pakistan.
According to the report, the heavy rains directly caused tragic accidents, resulting in the loss of the lives of 150 people. Also, 233 individuals sustained injuries across the country by June 25, 2023.
The victims included 62 men, 25 women, and at least 63 children among the deceased. Among the injured, 99 were men, 62 were women, and 72 were children. Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are the hardest-hit provinces, with 66 and 41 casualties, respectively.
