KARACHI/ ISLAMABAD: The Sindh government has recommended the name of Justice retired Maqbool Babar as a candidate for the Sindh caretaker CM position to the senior leadership of the Pakistan People’s Party.
According to sources, the process of appointing a caretaker chief minister will commence as the Sindh Assembly is set to be dissolved today.
A consultative meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, involving Sindh Chief Minister Syed Ali Shah and Opposition Leader in the Sindh Assembly, Rana Ansar, to discuss potential candidates for the caretaker CM position.
Sources indicate that the PPP leadership has no objections to the candidacy of Justice retired Maqbool Babar, who is considered a strong contender for the Sindh caretaker CM role.
However, according to sources, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah wanted to appoint Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah, former chief secretary of Sindh as caretaker chief executive of the province. Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah, who retired last year as chief secretary after reaching superannuation, is considered to be a strong candidate for the top slot. Mr. Shah throughout his illustrious career was considered to be one of the people-friendly bureaucrats of Sindh.
Furthermore, the Sindh government is hopeful that the opposition will not raise any objections to the nomination of Maqbool Babar.
Earlier, Sardar Abdul Rahim, a leader of the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), said that the names for the caretaker Sindh chief minister’s position would be revealed following the assembly’s dissolution.
During a press conference alongside leaders from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P), Sardar Abdul Rahim mentioned that the federal government had not yet finalized a name for the caretaker prime minister. He added that the GDA had nearly finalized the names of the caretaker chief minister and cabinet members.
