ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) called on the judiciary to intervene and take action against the government’s “unlawful behavior,” alleging that the PTI lawyers are not being allowed to meet Imran Khan in jail.
The former ruling party issued a statement after its core committee meeting. The meeting took place a day after the former prime minister was arrested following a court decision in Islamabad that found him guilty of graft in the Toshakhana case.
PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi and other leaders attended the meeting, where they discussed the arrest of the former premier and a legal action required for his immediate release.
In the statement, the core committee chairman protested against Khan’s transfer from Adiala jail to Attock jail, stating that the arrest reflects a biased trial and appears to be revenge against the PTI chairman under the guise of a wrongful decision. The core committee also voiced concern about the lack of information regarding the PTI chief and his lawyers’ constant problems in reaching him.
The statement emphasized the importance of lawyers having access to Imran Khan for legal action against the biased decision, stating that denying such access deprives the party of its right to legal action. The committee accused the government of acting in a fascist manner and called for the legal team to be given access to Imran Khan.
Moreover, the committee expressed concern about Imran Khan’s health and safety, raising the possibility of physical and mental violence against him. Additionally, the committee voiced concerns about the quality and cleanliness of the food provided to the former PM.
Finally, the committee also urged an end to the crackdown against PTI leaders.
