Rawalpindi Faces Widespread Flooding as Heavy rain pounds the twin cities

ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI: Heavy rainfall battered Islamabad and Rawalpindi, resulting in the declaration of a rain emergency in the twin cities. Local authorities deployed machinery to drain the rainwater from roads.

Muhammad Tanveer, the Managing Director of the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), confirmed the rain emergency in Rawalpindi. The continuous downpour, which began in the early morning and lasted for several hours, finally subsided around noon.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the twin cities experienced rainfall exceeding 60 millimeters, leading to a flood-like situation. Shamsabad recorded 60mm of rain, followed by Chaklala with 46mm, Pindi with 28mm, Rawat with 12mm, Golra with 16mm, and Saidpur with 20mm.

Heavy rain

The heavy rainfall resulted in water accumulation in low-lying areas, causing disruptions and posing risks to residents. Wasa mobilized heavy machinery and personnel to address the rising water levels in various locations.

The water level in Leh Nullah, a major waterway, reached 7.5 feet. The Gawalmandi Bridge reported a water flow of 6.5 feet, according to a statement from Wasa.

The teams made efforts to prevent damage and ensure smooth traffic flow by cleaning drainage systems, particularly in critical areas like Committee Chowk.

Tanveer stated that the authorities are committed to managing the emergency situation. They will tackle any additional challenges that may arise. He added that they have cleared the most affected areas with accumulated rainwater.
