ISLAMABAD: The Cybercrime Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) said that it has arrested nine individuals. They file charges against 19 others for their alleged involvement in blackmailing people using mobile for loan applications
The recent developments occurr one day after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) initiated an investigation into the death of a man in Rawalpindi. The individual, allegedly drive to take his own life, was reportedly threaten by loan apps due to his inability to repay the increasingly burdensome interest on his debts.
Before these events, the FIA team raided two loan application offices in the G-8 sector. The offices were sealed, and laptops and other materials were confiscate as evidence.
In a statement releases today, an FIA spokesperson reveal that the cybercrime cell, in collaboration with the financial services. They carried out raids in various areas of Rawalpindi. These operations resulted in arresting nine suspects and registering first information reports against 19 individuals.
The statement mentioned that Inspector Badar Munir sealed several loan application offices within a plaza situated on Saidu Sharif Road.
According to the FIA, the arrested suspects were assigned daily targets of making 100 to 150 calls to citizens, their acquaintances, and their family members. The raided offices also revealed the existence of a separate department that conducted what the FIA described as “torture calls.”
The FIA further disclosed that these departments were identified as “D-0, D-1, D-2, DS-1, DS-2, and DS-3.” The suspects allegedly gathered personal information about citizens through the loan apps and subsequently exploited it to harass people.
During the raid, a significant amount of documents, computers, laptops, and mobile SIM cards were taken.
The arrested suspects are currently undergoing investigation. while efforts are underway to apprehend others involved, according to the FIA.
