During the fourth match against New Zealand in Karachi on Friday, Babar Azam, the Pakistan skipper, became the fastest batter to reach 5,000 one-day international runs.
When Pakistan was sent into bat by New Zealand, the 28-year-old scored a single to reach 19, beating South African Hashim Amla’s record.
Azam achieved this milestone in 97 innings in 99 one-day internationals, outdoing Amla’s record of 101 innings from 104 matches.
He narrowly missed matching Amla’s record for the quickest 4,000 ODI runs last year, scoring them in 81 innings. For the last two years, Azam has been the number-one batter on the International Cricket Council’s ODI rankings.
He is the 14th Pakistani to score 5,000 or more runs in ODI cricket, with former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq at the top of the list with 11,701 runs.
Azam made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in his hometown of Lahore in May 2015.
In 2016 and 2022, he is the only batter to have twice scored consecutive hundreds in three ODIs.

In the ICC 50-over World Cup this October-November, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the much-anticipated match between India and Pakistan.
This fixture will mark the first time the two arch-rivals will face each other on Indian soil since 2016.
The BCCI selected the stadium in anticipation of a large number of fans expected to travel from abroad to witness the game, as it can accommodate up to 100,000 people.
The BCCI will announce the World Cup schedule at a grand launch once the Indian Premier League (IPL) concludes. Matches will begin on October 5.
