Pakistan among 20 states at risk of excessive rainfall:
According to a report prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS), Pakistan, along with 19 other countries, faces the risk of excessive rainfall due to the forecasted return of the El Nino oceanographic phenomenon in June, following three years of La Nina.
Additionally, the report warns that 42 countries are at risk of dry conditions due to the effects of El Nino. The report identifies the 20 countries at risk of excessive rainfall as Afghanistan, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Pakistan, Paraguay, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkiye, Turkmenistan, United States, and Uzbekistan.
The report aims to bring attention to countries where El Nino-induced dry weather conditions may occur, potentially exacerbating local food insecurity by adversely affecting cereal production in 2023-24.
Govt Urges Caution As Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorms Expected In Pakistan
Senator Sherry Rehman, the minister for climate change, asked the provinces to remain vigilant and take the required safety measures during the time of heavy rains anticipated across the country between April 26 and May 7.
She voiced her concern that the country might fall into a recovery trap and forewarned that unpredictable weather patterns might cause intermittent urban floods from Kashmir to Karachi.

Minister fears the country may ‘fall into a recovery trap’
The Met Office had earlier issued a warning to tourists, farmers, and the appropriate authorities that severe winds and hailstorms might harm exposed infrastructure and standing crops, especially the wheat crop.
The Met Office also warned that landslides might happen in the time in the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree, and Galliyat.
