According to authorities, gunmen posing as journalists shot and murdered Atiq Ahmed, a former member of India’s parliament, and his brother Ashraf while they were being brought to the hospital by police.
The incident occurred on Saturday as Ahmed, who had been imprisoned for abduction since 2019, was fielding reporters’ queries.
The gunman approached the brothers and shot them from close range, according to a television video.
Police official Prashant Kumar stated:
โAccording to preliminary information, three persons posing as journalists approached them and opened fireโฆ The attackers have been held and are being questioned.โ
A TV film from the northern Indian city of Prayagraj showed the gunmen screaming Hindu chants after they attacked the two victims.
Despite the fact that the victims were members of India’s Muslim minority, authorities would not clarify whether they were looking into the potential of a sectarian motive in the killings.
