The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lodged a petition in the Supreme Court against KP Governor Haji Ghulam Ali’s decision to set the polling date in the province for October 8.
The PTI argued that postponing elections due to reasons such as law and order situations and financial constraints could lead to an indefinite delay, which would undermine and violate the Constitution.
The party, represented by its Secretary General Asad Umer, KP Assembly Speaker Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani, former CM Mahmood Khan, former minister Shaukat Ali Yousafzai, and others, filed the petition under Article 184(3) of the Constitution.
The PTI named the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the Ministry of Interior representing the Federation of Pakistan, KP Governor Ghulam Ali, and the chief secretary as respondents in their petition.
They urged the apex court to direct the ECP to hold the general elections for the KP Assembly within 90 days, or the shortest possible time frame.
Additionally, they requested the court to declare the KP governor’s letter dated March 24, 2023, as illegal and in contradiction to the court’s directives on March 1, 2023.
Last week, the ECP announced that the general elections for the KP Assembly would take place on October 8, 2023, following their decision conveyed through a notification dated March 27.
Also, PTI Chairman, Imran Khan warned that if the ruling alliance attempted to block the implementation of the court’s decision to hold elections in Punjab on May 14, the people would take to the streets.
