Parliamentary Committee Wants to Relax CSS Exams Rules Due to High Failure Rate:
The Senate panel is advocating for a revamp of the education system in underdeveloped areas to enable residents to compete in the Central Superior Services (CSS) exams, which are mandatory to qualify for civil service positions.
During the meeting held on Tuesday, the Senate Standing Committee on the Cabinet Secretariat received a briefing on the forthcoming Special CSS exams for 2023 and deliberated on the necessity of overhauling education in underprivileged areas for deserving candidates.
Senator Rana Maqbool Ahmad, the Committee Chairman, raised concerns regarding the high failure rate of competitive exams, particularly among rural applicants.
The establishment division has reported that there are presently 52 vacancies for non-Muslim candidates in Punjab that remain unfilled.
The recommendation to improve the chances of success suggests that allowing age relaxation of up to 32 years and an additional attempt in the upcoming special CSS exams could make a significant difference.
The committee’s call for action underscores the urgent need to address the disparities in the education system and provide equal opportunities to all candidates seeking civil service positions.
The briefing further revealed that candidates from the minority quota in Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, women and minorities from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and all candidates from Sindh, Balochistan, and the former federally administered tribal areas (FATA) are eligible to apply for the special CSS exams.
CSS Exams
The special CSS exams consist of two application phases.
The organizers held the first phase of the special CSS exams from December 18, 2022, to January 4, 2023, and the second phase took place from February 26 to March 14 of this year. As of March 8, the total number of applications received was 44,238.
Candidates who pass a preliminary test that includes multiple-choice questions will be offered coaching for compulsory subjects and called for interviews from June to August.
The selection process for each existing vacancy will involve the selection of four candidates under their respective quotas.
However, practical implementation and monitoring of the matter need further discussion to determine the course of action.
