First 5G ‘Innovation Lab’ established at NUST

ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) launched Pakistan’s first 5G Innovation Lab, a collaboration between the private sector and the public sector.

The first 5G Innovation Lab in Pakistan was officially opened at NUST by Mohsin Mushtaq, Federal Secretary for the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom (MoITT), which is powered by Jazz, Pakistan’s largest digital operator, in partnership with Huawei.

Shiza Fatima, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Youth Affairs, Muhammad Naveed, the Member Finance of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Kaan Terziolu, the CEO of the VEON Group, Augie K. Fabela, the Co-Founder of Veon, Aamir Ibrahim, the CEO of Jazz, and other significant figures from the ICT sector were with him.

The 5G Innovation Lab will assist researchers in developing use cases for 5G in the areas of artificial intelligence, augmented/virtual reality and h, healthcare, Industry 4.0, agriculture, security, disaster management, entertainment, and the public sector by leveraging its high bandwidth, low latency, and advanced security.

The innovation lab’s goal is to assess 5G’s usefulness through a social-economic lens and introduce homegrown solutions for mobility, health, education, and business that are appropriate for the region.

In order to ascertain the impact and utility of 5G telecom services in Pakistani society, the “innovation lab” is a research project supported by Jazz, the largest telecom operator in the nation, and Huawei Technologies.

“This lab will play a pivotal role in helping us build an ecosystem to explore 5G-enabled use cases in Agritech, EdTech, etc.

while serving as a conduit for the interplay of technologies like Artificial Intelligence/ Machine Learning, Internet of Things, and Cyber Security,” Mushtaq said.

 “While our priority is to provide 4G for all, we must also look at the future of communications where 5G will have an important role to play.

Jazz is making a major commitment towards innovation in the country and exploring the potential of 5G to help transform business and society. We set out to empower our customers while enhancing the prosperity of the countries we operate in, and Jazz’s 5G innovation lab aims to deliver both in Pakistan,” Kaan Terziolu stated.

It was emphasised that the project will assist researchers in working on potential use cases for 5G in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality, and virtual reality by leveraging its high bandwidth, low latency, and advanced security.

The healthcare industry, manufacturing and service industries, agriculture, security, disaster management, entertainment, and the public sector will all be affected by this.
