On Thursday, US Vice President Joe Biden vowed to “liberate” Iran and predicted that protesters opposing the regime there will soon succeed in setting themselves free.
“Don’t fear; Iran will be set free. During a lengthy campaign address in California, Biden predicted that the Iranian protestors would soon be released. Outside, scores of supporters had gathered with banners in favour of the Iranian protesters.
During the speech at MiraCosta College outside San Diego, Biden did not elaborate on his points or list any specific steps he would do.
Requests for comment from the National Security Council of the White House were not immediately fulfilled.
The death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman, while in the morality police’s care in Iran sparked seven weeks of protests.
On Wednesday, the United States said that it would work to have Iran removed from the 45-member U.N. Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) due to the government’s ruthless suppression of protesters and denial of women’s rights. View More
The commission, which meets yearly in March and seeks to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment, has just begun Iran’s four-year tenure.
