The United Nations issued a dire warning on Monday, saying that the number of people subjected to forced labor or forced marriage has reached 50 million.
Despite the United Nations’ goal of ending all forms of modern slavery by 2030, a recent estimate suggests that the number of people subjected to forced labor or forced marriage would climb by 10 million between 2016 and 2021.
According to a report compiled by the UN agencies for labor and migration and the Walk Free Foundation at the end of 2017, 28 million individuals were being forced to work and 22 million people were being forced to marry.
As found by the study, this translates to around one in every 150 individuals worldwide being victims of modern slavery of some kind.
ILO Director General: Guy Ryder, Director General of the International Labor Organization, has expressed his dismay at the lack of progress in combating modern slavery.
No justification is ever sufficient for such a flagrant disregard for human rights.
