A sleeper bus and an oil tanker collided on the M-5 Motorway, commonly known as the Multan-Sukkur Motorway, in Bahawalpur on Tuesday, resulting in at least 20 deaths and six injuries. The passenger bus was travelling from Karachi to Lahore.
Accident was caused due to over speeding, Motorway Officials Reported.
According to Motorway officials, the collision happened when the speeding sleeper bus lost control and hit an oncoming oil tanker. For several hours, traffic was stopped at the scene of the accident on the M-5 Motorway.
According to the Motorway Police spokesperson, the oil tanker and the bus took fire shortly after the incident. As soon as the accident occurred, Motorway Police officers arrived on the scene. Rescue 1122 teams and the local police both arrived at the scene.
The majority of the passengers were pulled out of the flaming vehicles alive and sent right away to neighbouring hospitals. Nine people at least were saved from the burning bus safely.
The Motorway Police created an emergency crisis centre per the direction of IG Khalid Mahmood. DIG Shahid Jawad was present throughout the rescue effort.
