The Quetta Electric Supply Company (Qesco) has been fined Rs. 10 million by the National Electric Regulatory Authority (Nepra) in relation to the deaths of residents from electrocution.
15 persons reportedly died from electrocution between July 2019 and June 2021, according to Nepra sources. A two-person committee was established by the power regulator to look into the fatalities. In its investigation, the body blamed Qesco for 14 of the fatalities.
Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) was fined Rs65 million by the government in May of this year for claims of negligence that led to 39 fatalities in the company’s service region between July 2019 and June 2021.
In addition, Nepra had mandated IESCO in its ruling to pay Rs3.5 million in compensation to the relatives of each of the deceased employees, per each deceased employee. Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has been fined Rs65 million by NEPRA for claims of incompetence that resulted in deadly accidents.
In response to the deaths of residents from electrocution in the second-largest city in Sindh, Nepra fined the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco) Rs.31 million in October of last year.
The power company’s irresponsibility also resulted in the deaths of five Hesco personnel and seven regular individuals.
The power regulator has fined K-Electric Rs 2 million later that month. This fine was levied for failing to meet performance criteria, namely for failing to restore power within the allotted time frame and for failing to guarantee the safety of the citizens of the nation’s commercial center.
