The final Ukrainian-controlled city in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine, Lysychansk, has been taken over by Russia. According to the nation’s Ministry of Defence, the military had taken control of Lysychansk and several surrounding settlements on Sunday. Sergei Shoigu, the Russian Defense Minister, informed President Vladimir Putin of this.
On Sunday, Ukrainian government representatives had been unusually silent about the violence in the area. That could be somewhat accounted for by “operational security” factors. They wouldn’t want any tactical retreat to be made public. But losing Lysychansk will be perceived in the east as another loss.
Just over a weak ago, Severodonetsk had been taken by Russian soldiers.
The conflict in Donbas is far from over with Lysychansk’s fall. Large metropolitan centers in neighboring Donetsk remain under Ukrainian control. Although they too are currently the target of intense Russian shelling, their forces have begun constructing new defensive lines between Bakhmut and Slovyansk. Heavy losses have been occurring on both sides.
