Prime Minister Imran Khan and erstwhile opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif have been contacted by President Dr Arif Alvi to begin deliberations on the final choice of the caretaker prime minister.
Article 224A (1) of the Constitution mandates a three-day consultation period between the two leaders before naming a caretaker prime minister. The speaker of the National Assembly is notified if the matter cannot be resolved.
Following the rejection of a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Imran Khan by the opposition, National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Khan Suri adjourned the session on Sunday.
On the suggestion of Prime Minister Imran Khan, President Dr Arif Alvi dissolved the National Assembly after it was adjourned.
After that, the President’s House issued a statement stating that PM Imran Khan will continue to serve as prime minister until Article 224A (4) of the Constitution designates a caretaker premier.
