UN Approves Official Presence In Taliban-run Afghanistan

Russia was the only one to vote against the decision in a 14-1 vote.

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Security Council voted on Thursday to establish a formal presence in Afghanistan, as the Taliban administration is still not recognised legitimate by the international community.

A new one-year mandate for the UN political mission in Afghanistan is outlined in the resolution, which does not mention the Taliban by name but instead calls the operation “critical” to achieve peace in the country.

Russia was the only one to vote against the decision in a 14-1 vote.

Women, children, and journalists are just some groups that will benefit from the resolution’s various threads of collaboration.

Besides responding to the current humanitarian and economic crises, the expanded mandate for UNAMA (the UN mission in Afghanistan) is critical for achieving a larger purpose of peace and stability in Afghanistan, Norwegian UN ambassador Mona Juul told AFP following the decision.

It is apparent from this new mission that the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has a crucial role to play in fostering peace and stability as well as providing support to the Afghan people, Juul added.
