An explosion at Engro Corporation’s Powergen Thar (Pvt.) Limited power plant in the coal conveyor system of the facility’s 330MW Unit 1 injured at least five persons, the company reported Wednesday.
Engro said in a statement that the incident happened around 5 p.m.
Safety and emergency response teams were immediately put into action. “Our first concern at this time is the safety and well-being of our employees and we will continue to provide them with all the assistance they need,” the statement stated.
The firm says that five workers were hurt in the accident, but that they are in stable condition and receiving the medical attention they need.
A statement from Engro stated that the first signs indicated that the explosion happened in the conveyor belt systems that deliver coal into the power plant.
There was a scheduled outage at the power plant, but one of the units had already been shut down for repair.
The operative unit has been shut down for safety reasons while the event is investigated, according to the company’s statement.
