Murree: Government lifts ban on tourist entrance, Snowfall Expected

8000 vehicles will enter the hill station and entry will be banned from 5 pm to 5 am for tourists

MURREE: Ten days after the Murree blizzard disaster that claimed the lives of 23, the Government has lifted the travel ban on visitors entering Murree and Galiyat.
Because of the Murree disaster, the Punjab government had set up measures to prevent everyone except locals from entering the city. Visitors can visit Murree after January 17 if they meet certain conditions, the district administration said.

Locals and military vehicles, as well as people from Azad Kashmir, will be spared from the entrance prohibition, which will apply from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. to up to 8000 cars. So, up to 8000 vehicles will enter the hill station.

Only 900 cars entered Murree on the first day, according to the traffic police. The major entry point of Murree is also being used to keep track of tourist cars coming in and out. Because of fewer tourists, hotels have also cut their rentals.

23 people lost their lives earlier this month in massive traffic congestion brought on by the throngs of tourists flocking to the mountain town to witness the unusually heavy snowfalls.

As Murree prepares for the next expected snowfall, the PDMA has issued prior alerts.

Snow and rain are predicted to fall in Punjab’s Murree and other areas, prompting a warning from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The Punjab Disaster Management Authority has issued a rain and snow alert for the days of Tuesday to Thursday Morning in Murree, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala and all surrounding areas.

The PDMA has recommended precautionary steps to all deputy commissioners and emergency services in the province.
