Police arrested a 63-year-old man on March 12, 2026 after he pulled a pistol and tried to shoot senior Kashmiri leader Farooq Abdullah at a wedding in Jammuโs Greater Kailash area.
Close Call During Wedding Function
Farooq Abdullah, the 88-year-old president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and former chief minister, attended the ceremony with his son Omar Abdullah, who is the current chief minister. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and adviser Nasir Aslam Wani were also there.
The attacker suddenly drew a pistol and moved toward Abdullah. Security guards from Jammu and Kashmir Police and the National Security Guard (NSG) reacted instantly. They tackled the man and stopped him before he could harm anyone. Some guests said they heard a gunshot, but police have not confirmed this detail yet.
Omar Abdullah shared the news on X late Wednesday. He wrote that his father had a very narrow escape. A man with a loaded gun reached point-blank range and fired. Fortunately, the close protection team deflected the shot and saved his father. Omar questioned how the attacker got so close to someone under Z+ NSG protection.
He also posted a short video clip from the hall. In the footage, Abdullah walks among guests. A man approaches from behind, pulls out what looks like a gun, points it, and gets overpowered immediately by guards.
Suspectโs Identity and Long-Held Plan
Police identified the arrested man as Kamal Singh Jamwal from Purani Mandi in Jammu. They recovered the pistol from him.
According to officials quoted by Hindustan Times, Jamwal told investigators he had planned to kill Abdullah for nearly 20 years. He said it was his personal mission and that the gun belonged to him and was legally issued. He added that he felt lucky to survive the attempt.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police released a short statement. They confirmed an attempt on Dr Farooq Abdullahโs life while he attended a marriage at Royal Park, Greater Kailash. Security teams acted quickly and prevented the attack.
Reactions Pour In
Additionally, former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti reacted on X. She said she felt shocked by the attack on Dr Farooq Abdullah. She expressed relief that he is safe and doing well. She hoped police would investigate the serious security lapse thoroughly.
