Continuous rainfall and fresh snowfall in Gilgit-Baltistan have caused multiple landslides, blocking the Karakoram Highway (KKH) between Diamer and Kohistan districts. The highway closure has stranded thousands of passengers, including elders, children, and patients traveling to and from the region.
The Diamer administration confirmed that landslides have affected several locations from Barseen in Upper Kohistan to Pattan in Lower Kohistan. Work to clear the debris will begin once weather conditions improve, with the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) assigned to restore access.
Meteorological Warnings and Safety Measures
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had issued alerts predicting glacial lake outburst floods, snow avalanches, and landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until March 12. Rainfall continued across most parts of GB, while higher-altitude regions received fresh snowfall, creating additional challenges for residents.
The Deputy Commissioner of Gilgit urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and ensure vehicles are equipped with snow chains if travel is essential. Residents near glaciers and areas with weak infrastructure were advised to take precautionary measures during this period of severe weather.
Disruption to Local Communities
Intermittent rainfall and snow have cut off access to remote areas, leaving communities isolated. Police reports confirm landslides in both Diamer and Kohistan districts, making local travel extremely hazardous. Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely and prioritize the clearing of critical routes for emergency services.
The Diamer administration also confirmed that the KKH section from Gilgit to Rawalpindi remains blocked at multiple locations, further complicating travel and logistics for commuters and goods transport.
Separate Incident: Lightning Strike in Shangla
In a tragic incident, a lightning strike killed three members of a family in the Lilownai Achar area of Shangla district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The victims included a couple and their son, while three other children survived unharmed. The strike occurred early Wednesday during severe weather in the region, highlighting the risks associated with ongoing storms in northern Pakistan.
Continued Vigilance Required
Authorities are urging residents and travelers to remain alert and cautious until weather conditions stabilize. Heavy rainfall and snowfall in the region are expected to continue through March 12, increasing the risk of further landslides and road blockages. Emergency services and local administrations are on standby to respond to new incidents.
