E-Taxi scheme launched in Punjab
LAHORE: Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated Pakistan’s first e-taxi scheme today. She introduced the initiative to promote eco-friendly transport and create employment opportunities in Punjab.
In the first phase, authorities will distribute 1,100 electric vehicles under the programme.
Officials have reserved a 30 percent quota for women drivers to encourage female participation in the transport sector. Moreover, the government will introduce a distinct vehicle colour for taxis driven by women to ensure visibility and comfort for female passengers.
Financial Support and Easy Installments for E-Taxi
The Punjab government will provide substantial financial assistance to selected drivers. It will pay 50 percent of the down payment for male drivers and 60 percent for female drivers. In addition, the government will cover vehicle registration, fitness test, and token tax fees to reduce the financial burden on applicants.
Drivers will repay the remaining amount through easy installments spread over five years. As a result, the scheme aims to make vehicle ownership affordable while supporting sustainable livelihoods.
E-Taxi Safety Features and Digital Integration
To strengthen passenger and driver safety, authorities will install a pink emergency button in every e-taxi. The button will connect directly to the Punjab Safe City Authority for rapid response in emergencies. Furthermore, the vehicles will operate through ride-hailing platforms InDrive and Yango to ensure transparent booking and monitoring.
The government will also set up fast-charging stations at key public locations to facilitate uninterrupted operations. Additionally, the scheme will support digital payment options, promoting a cashless and modern transport system across the province.
