Government Pushes Green Transport to Fight Fuel Costs and Pollution
The federal government has officially approved the Prime Minister’s Electric Bike and Rickshaw Scheme 2026. The scheme is part of the larger PAVE program, aimed at promoting clean energy and reducing reliance on petrol.
Speaking to the media, Hamad Ali Mansoor, CEO of the Engineering Development Board, revealed the government has allocated Rs 100 billion for the project over the next five years. For the 2026 fiscal year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set aside Rs 9 billion to subsidize electric vehicles.
The scheme aims to address rising fuel costs and combat pollution. Officials said making electric bikes and rickshaws affordable is central to reducing commuting expenses for everyday Pakistanis.
Subsidies Make EVs Cheaper Than Petrol Vehicles
Under the scheme, electric vehicles will receive significant subsidies.
-
Electric Motorcycles: Rs 80,000 per bike.
-
Electric Rickshaws: Rs 400,000 per unit.
These subsidies make EV bikes Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 cheaper than market alternatives. The plan will help lower-income and middle-class families access green transportation.
For 2026, the program aims to subsidize 116,000 electric bikes. Electric rickshaws will be distributed as part of PAVE Phase 1. By offering “cash-back” style discounts, the government hopes to encourage rapid adoption.
Officials emphasize that this initiative is more than environmental. By reducing commuting costs, it directly combats inflation pressures affecting petrol users across Pakistan.
Targets and Deadlines for Phase 1
The Engineering Development Board is moving quickly to achieve distribution goals.
-
Phase 1 Goal: Deliver 76,000 electric motorcycles by June 2026.
-
Total Annual Target: 116,000 electric bikes for the 2026 fiscal year.
Authorities are pushing to make electric vehicles accessible to every middle-class household. Officials hope the scheme will create a noticeable shift toward green commuting nationwide.
The project also encourages local EV production and may create jobs in assembly, maintenance, and supply chains. Experts say such programs can have long-term benefits for both the environment and the economy.
The government urges citizens to check eligibility and participate in the scheme as soon as possible. Applications and guidelines will be shared through official portals.
With affordable subsidies, clear targets, and a green focus, the Prime Minister’s Electric Bike and Rickshaw Scheme 2026 promises to reshape Pakistan’s commuting landscape.
