ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has initiated the process to construct and rehabilitate a 9-kilometre service road from Faizabad Interchange to Gulberg Greens in a major effort to reduce growing traffic congestion on the Islamabad Expressway.
Officials said the project will provide an alternative route for commuters who face heavy daily pressure on the main highway. The proposed service road will run from Faizabad and pass through key populated areas, including Soan, Pindorian, Shakrial, Garden Town, Khanna, Kangal, Ghouri Town, and Korral. As a result, residents in these rapidly expanding sectors will gain improved access to Islamabad and nearby commercial zones.
CDA authorities said the project will be executed in phases. In the first phase, the authority will complete the service road up to Gulberg Greens. Once this portion becomes operational, the CDA will extend the road further from Korral to Rawat. Therefore, the extended stretch will create a continuous alternate traffic corridor running alongside the expressway.
Officials believe the new service road will reduce travel time, improve traffic flow, and strengthen connectivity for thousands of daily commuters. Moreover, the project forms part of CDAโs broader strategy to upgrade road infrastructure and address long-standing congestion issues on one of the capitalโs busiest routes.
CDA officials said the service road will also support future urban growth along the expressway by providing better access to residential communities and commercial activity hubs. Meanwhile, commuters have long demanded a practical solution to traffic bottlenecks that regularly build up near Faizabad and along the expresswayโs main lanes.
The authority expects the phased construction approach to minimise disruption while delivering early relief to motorists. Further updates on timelines and execution will follow as the process moves ahead.
