The new modem is rumoured to support NR-NTN technology. NR-NTN stands for New Radio Non-Terrestrial Networks. This standard allows devices to connect to satellites for data transmission.
If implemented, this feature could transform mobile connectivity. Users may not need to rely solely on cellular towers. Satellite 5G could provide internet access in remote mountains, deserts, and rural regions.
Outdoor travellers may benefit the most. Checking live scores, sending messages, or browsing maps could become easier in low-signal areas. Connectivity gaps may shrink significantly.
Apple has been gradually reducing dependence on third-party modem suppliers. The in-house C2 modem could improve network efficiency. It may also enhance battery performance.
Reports suggest the modem could further optimise Apple’s “limit precise location” feature. This privacy function is already available on devices like the iPhone 16e and select iPads. Future iPhone models may receive expanded support.
Possible Satellite Partnerships and Launch Timeline
To enable satellite 5G, Apple may need a strong satellite partner. Industry observers speculate about a potential collaboration with Starlink. Starlink is operated by Elon Musk.
