Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to confer a posthumous national civil award on 22-year-old Oun Abbas. The young man lost his life while resisting a suicide attacker at an Islamabad imambargah.
The attack took place on February 6 during Friday prayers. A suicide bomber targeted Imambargah Qasr-i-Khadijatul Kubra on the outskirts of Islamabad. As a result, at least 38 people lost their lives. Moreover, more than 150 sustained injuries.
According to eyewitnesses, Abbas acted without hesitation. He left his place in the congregation and moved toward the attacker. Instead of seeking safety, he attempted to overpower the bomber. However, the attacker detonated explosives during the struggle. Consequently, Abbas embraced martyrdom.
Governor Kundiโs Letter to the Prime Minister
In a letter dated February 11, Governor Kundi praised Abbas for his bravery. He described the young manโs actions as exceptional gallantry and supreme sacrifice. Furthermore, he emphasized that Abbas confronted the terrorist during moments of chaos and fear.
The governor noted that many worshippers tried to protect themselves. In contrast, Abbas chose to face the threat directly. Therefore, his intervention may have prevented an even greater tragedy. The governor stated that his courage helped save countless innocent lives.
Kundi recommended that the prime minister confer a posthumous civil award. He specifically mentioned Sitara-i-Shujaat or Tamgha-i-Shujaat. According to him, such recognition would honor Abbas with national dignity. In addition, it would inspire young Pakistanis to serve their communities with courage and faith.
The governor also requested swift action on the recommendation. He urged the prime minister to treat the matter with urgency. He said the award would stand as a lasting tribute to Abbasโs sacrifice.
Earlier Appeal and Financial Assistance
Earlier this week, Governor Kundi repeated the appeal during a visit to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. Several injured victims continue to receive treatment there.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced financial compensation for the victims. He allocated Rs10 million for the heirs of Oun Abbas. Additionally, he announced Rs5 million for each person martyred in the attack.
Critically injured victims will receive Rs3 million. Those who suffered minor injuries will receive Rs1 million. Through these measures, the government aims to support grieving families.
A National Conversation on Courage
The Islamabad attack shocked the nation. However, Abbasโs actions sparked widespread admiration. His bravery during a moment of terror drew attention across the country.
Now, the decision rests with the prime minister. If approved, the civil award would formally recognize his sacrifice. Ultimately, the recommendation highlights a broader message. Courage and selflessness remain powerful symbols of national unity.
