Senator Rana Sanaullah has stated that health and medical treatment are fundamental rights of every human being. He warned that politicizing someone’s health is a serious wrongdoing.
He made these remarks during a Senate session marked by protests from PTI lawmakers. The session was chaired by Presiding Officer Waqar Mehdi.
While addressing the House, he stressed that no politics should surround a person’s medical condition. In particular, he referred to the jailed founder of PTI.
“If anyone does politics on someone’s health, they will be doing wrong,” he said. Meanwhile, PTI members protested during his speech.
Matter Before the Supreme Court
Rana Sanaullah stated that the issue currently stands before the Supreme Court. Therefore, he advised concerned parties to approach the court instead of raising the matter politically in parliament.
He said the Chief Justice of Pakistan directed that additional specialists examine the PTI founder’s health. Moreover, authorities arranged the medical review in consultation with Barrister Salman Safdar and the legal team.
He added that if a better specialist than those at PIMS Hospital is available, that doctor may also conduct the examination.
Role of Amicus Curiae
The Supreme Court appointed Barrister Salman Safdar as amicus curiae. He met the PTI founder in jail for around three and a half hours.
After the meeting, he submitted a report detailing the health condition and available facilities. According to Rana Sanaullah, the report dismissed claims made over the past four months.
Those claims included allegations of solitary confinement and denial of facilities. However, the report mentioned that the PTI founder was not fully satisfied with his treatment.
Rana Sanaullah said jail doctors examined him whenever he complained. Furthermore, treatment was provided at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences.
He argued that labeling the situation as a crime would be incorrect. Additionally, he claimed Barrister Safdar’s position shifted after criticism from PTI supporters on social media.
Supreme Court Directives on Medical Care
Earlier, the Supreme Court directed that the PTI founder receive access to eye specialists. The court also ordered telephonic contact with his sons, Qasim and Suleman, before February 16.
A two-member bench reviewed reports from Safdar and the jail superintendent. Both reports recommended immediate eye treatment and family communication.
The court noted that jail security and food arrangements were satisfactory. However, the PTI founder expressed dissatisfaction with medical facilities.
Chief Justice Yahya Afridi emphasized that the state must provide necessary medical care to all prisoners. At the same time, he clarified that no inmate should receive extra facilities beyond others.
Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan assured the court that specialist access would be provided. The court also directed the formation of an expert medical team.
However, it rejected the request to allow a family member during the medical examination.
Health Report Findings
According to the report, the PTI founder’s vision remained normal until October 2025. After that period, he experienced continuous blurred vision.
The report stated that delayed action led to complete vision loss in the right eye. An ophthalmologist diagnosed a blood clot as the cause.
Despite injections and treatment, vision in the right eye remains at 15 percent. During the meeting, he appeared concerned about delayed care.
The court also addressed telephonic contact and reading materials. It directed that family communication be facilitated. Meanwhile, doctors will decide whether reading books is advisable.
Rana Sanaullah reiterated that health and treatment are fundamental rights. Therefore, he urged lawmakers to avoid politicizing the matter. The Imran Khan medical treatment Supreme Court proceedings continue under judicial oversight.
