A devastating suicide bombing struck an imambargah in Islamabad during Friday prayers, killing 31 worshippers and injuring over 160 others. The attack occurred in the Tarlai area, sending shockwaves across the country and triggering widespread condemnation.
Attack Details Emerge
According to official sources, the attacker was linked to Fitna al-Khawarij. Security personnel stopped the suspect at the main gate of the imambargah. However, the attacker opened fire and forced his way inside.
Moments later, he detonated explosives while prayers were underway. The blast caused severe destruction inside the religious facility. Windows shattered across the three-storey building, while nearby homes also suffered damage.
Moreover, several security guards sustained injuries during the initial exchange of fire. The force of the explosion highlighted the use of heavy explosives.
Emergency Response and Medical Crisis
Following the blast, law enforcement agencies immediately cordoned off the area. Rescue teams rushed victims to nearby hospitals. However, medical facilities in the capital quickly reached capacity.
As a result, authorities shifted several injured individuals to hospitals in Rawalpindi. An emergency was imposed at major hospitals, including PIMS, Polyclinic, and CDA Hospital.
Additionally, assistant commissioners were deployed to supervise treatment and ensure proper medical care.
Government and Political Reactions
The countryโs leadership strongly condemned the attack. The President expressed deep sorrow and offered condolences to the families of the martyrs. He also prayed for patience and strength for the bereaved.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister described the bombing as a brutal act of terrorism. He expressed grief over the loss of innocent lives and directed authorities to provide full medical support.
Opposition leaders also denounced the incident. They termed the attack on a place of worship an assault on humanity and religious values.
International Condemnation
Foreign representatives also reacted strongly. Iranโs ambassador to Pakistan condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the Pakistani people. He extended condolences to the affected families and prayed for the injured.
Ongoing Security Operations
Security forces have intensified operations against Fitna al-Khawarij under the national counter-terrorism vision. Authorities reaffirmed their resolve to eliminate terrorism sponsored by hostile elements.
