Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has nullified the provincial ombudsperson’s order against K-Electric CEO Syed Moonis Abdullah Alvi.
The ruling originally directed Alvi’s removal over harassment allegations by a former female employee.
Governor Tessori stated that the ombudsperson ignored available evidence, making the July 31, 2025, decision invalid.
Background of the Case
In July last year, the Sindh Ombudsman for Protection Against Harassment at the Workplace ordered Alvi’s immediate removal.
The female officer had accused him of harassment, intimidation, and causing mental distress during her employment. She was also awarded a penalty of Rs2.5 million, which Alvi was directed to pay.
Legal Suspension and Court Intervention
The Sindh High Court suspended the ombudsperson’s order the following day. It directed Alvi to deposit the fine with the court registry while proceedings continued. The case involved claims that Alvi and others had harassed the former chief marketing and communications officer.
Governor’s Observations
In a seven-page order, the governor noted the employee did not file a written complaint before the company’s HR committee.
Although she submitted a WhatsApp chat as evidence, the record did not cover all her allegations. The alleged incidents spanned her entire employment period until termination, preceding the September 5, 2020 chat.
Board HR Committee Decision
The governor highlighted that the company’s Board HR Committee recommended the employee’s resignation due to poor performance.
Alvi’s witness provided minutes of meetings showing her termination was based on unsatisfactory feedback.
A “secret recording” submitted by the employee confirmed that the termination decision rested with the HR Committee, not the CEO.
Legal Basis for Nullification
Exercising powers under Section 9 of the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2010,
the Sindh governor officially set aside the ombudsperson’s order. This decision negates claims that Alvi retaliated against the employee for raising harassment allegations.
Conclusion
The governor’s ruling clarifies that K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi was not personally responsible for the employee’s termination. It emphasizes procedural adherence and the role of company HR committees in employment decisions. The case highlights the importance of verified evidence and legal compliance in workplace harassment investigations.
