Reduced School Hours Extended Until February 4
Sindhโs School Education and Literacy Department has extended the revised winter school timings across the province. The decision comes as the cold wave continues to intensify. The department announced the extension on Sunday.
The revised schedule requires all public and private schools to start classes at 9am. The closing time remains unchanged. This shift aims to reduce exposure to early morning cold for students and staff.
The revised timings were first introduced on January 10. At that time, the department ordered schools to open later in the morning. The measure was meant to protect children from the severe winter chill.
Initially, the revised schedule was extended until January 26. Now, the department has extended it further until February 4. The new notification was issued by the education department and confirmed by officials.
The notification stated that the timing arrangement would continue under the administrative control of the School Education and Literacy Department. It said the change would remain in effect until February 4, 2026.
Cold Wave Triggers Government Response
A spokesperson for the education department said the decision was made due to the worsening cold weather. The spokesperson confirmed that the change was implemented under the directives of Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah.
The department said the aim is to protect students and staff from early morning cold. It also noted that the revised timings would help reduce health risks associated with low temperatures.
Sindh has been experiencing a severe cold wave in recent weeks. The conditions have raised concerns about student safety and attendance. Many schools have reported lower attendance due to the weather.
Officials said the extension is part of a broader effort to manage the cold wave. They stressed that student safety remains a priority for the government. The department urged schools to follow the revised timings strictly.
Weather Forecast Shows More Cold and Rain Ahead
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also issued warnings about further cold conditions. The Met Office said temperatures in Karachi could fall to single digits over the weekend.
The PMD predicted that the weather in Karachi would remain cold and dry. Occasional winds are also expected. These conditions could make the city feel even colder.
In addition to cold weather, the PMD forecast more rain and snowfall in various parts of the country. The forecast covers the period from Sunday to Tuesday. Authorities have urged residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
The Sindh education departmentโs extension of school timings comes as part of the governmentโs efforts to handle the ongoing cold wave. Schools across the province are now preparing to continue classes under the revised schedule until February 4.
Parents have been advised to dress their children warmly and ensure they reach school safely. The education department has also urged schools to remain flexible and support students during the cold spell.
