KARACHI: The Sindh Building Control Authority has issued a three-day ultimatum for the installation of fire safety systems in buildings across Karachi, intensifying regulatory pressure on builders and property owners. Officials said the directive aims to ensure immediate compliance with safety standards amid growing concerns over urban fire risks.
According to the authority, a formal letter has been dispatched to the chairpersons of relevant agencies, directing them to act without delay. The SBCA instructed that the fire safety audit carried out by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation must be implemented in full.
Authorities push for immediate compliance
The SBCA stated that numerous buildings continue to operate without adopting prescribed fire prevention measures. As a result, owners and developers who remain non-compliant now face a strict three-day deadline to install approved safety systems.
Officials emphasised that timely enforcement is essential for public safety and citywide preparedness. Moreover, the authority warned that failure to comply could invite further regulatory action, as preventing fire-related incidents remains a top priority for Karachiโs rapidly expanding urban landscape.
The SBCA stressed that the swift execution of safety audits and installations serves the broader public interest. In addition, officials said coordinated action between regulatory bodies would help avert potential tragedies and strengthen accountability.
Mayor highlights ongoing inspections
Meanwhile, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said fire safety audits of six buildings in District South and District East were conducted on the same day. He added that inspection teams continue to assess high-risk structures across the city.
The mayor urged all building owners to take the matter seriously and ensure proper fire safety arrangements. He noted that safeguarding lives and property requires shared responsibility between authorities and the private sector.
City officials said inspections and follow-up actions will continue as part of a wider effort to improve compliance and resilience.
