Pakistan is moving closer to launching fifth-generation mobile services. The government has accelerated work on the 5G spectrum auction. Regulatory and policy preparations are now in the final stages. Authorities aim to complete all key steps within the coming weeks.
Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima shared these updates while speaking to the media at Parliament House. She confirmed that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is actively working on a critical document related to the auction. This document will determine how 5G services are rolled out across the country.
The government wants to ensure transparency, service quality, and rapid deployment. Officials believe that timely execution will strengthen Pakistanโs digital economy and telecom infrastructure.
5G Spectrum Auction Planned During Ramadan
Shaza Fatima stated that the 5G spectrum auction is planned for the month of Ramadan. The government is targeting the end of February to complete all formal requirements. Regulatory approvals and consultations are being prioritized.
She explained that once these processes are finalized, the government will move swiftly. The goal is to avoid unnecessary delays. Authorities want telecom operators to be fully prepared before the auction begins.
The minister emphasized that Pakistan cannot afford to lag behind in advanced mobile technologies. She said the government sees 5G as a key driver of innovation, connectivity, and economic growth. Faster data speeds and lower latency will benefit businesses and consumers alike.
PTA Consultations on Information Memorandum Underway
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is currently holding consultations with all relevant stakeholders. These discussions focus on the Information Memorandum for the 5G auction. Special attention is being given to quality of service standards and rollout obligations.
According to Shaza Fatima, telecom operators have been given three weeks to review the proposed framework. They are expected to submit their feedback within this period. The PTA will assess these recommendations carefully.
After the consultation phase ends, the Information Memorandum will be finalized in the first week of February. This document will define auction rules, spectrum conditions, and deployment requirements. It will also ensure fair competition among telecom companies.
Improved 3G and 4G Services Expected After Auction
The minister highlighted another important benefit of the 5G auction. She said that the quality of existing 3G and 4G services is expected to improve soon after the auction. Improvements could be visible within three to four months.
She added that telecom operators are already making internal preparations. Network upgrades and infrastructure planning are underway. These efforts will help support both existing and future technologies.
Shaza Fatima also revealed that 5G services could launch in major cities within six months after the auction. Initial rollouts will focus on urban centers. Gradual expansion will follow in other regions.
The government believes that strong planning and clear policies will ensure success. With PTA finalizing key documents, Pakistan is now closer than ever to entering the 5G era.
