A district court in Jacobabad has taken serious notice of a custodial rape case involving six police officials. The development has intensified public attention on police conduct and institutional accountability in Sindh.
The case relates to the alleged gang rape of a woman, Asia Khoso, during police custody in Tehsil Thal. Authorities initiated a complete inquiry following directives from senior provincial leadership.
Inquiry Confirms Allegations Against Police Officials
According to the findings of the official investigation, six police officers were found responsible for the crime. The inquiry concluded that the woman was sexually assaulted repeatedly while being unlawfully detained.
After the investigation, law enforcement authorities arrested all six accused officials. A formal case was registered at RD 44 police station on the complaint of the victimโs grandmother.
The accused include an assistant sub-inspector, one head constable, and four constables. Their names were recorded in the first information report for further legal proceedings.
Background of the Incident
The incident followed a violent clash between two local communities in the Thal area. The dispute reportedly stemmed from a black money case that escalated into deadly violence.
During the clash, a man from the Tanori community was killed. Several suspects fled the scene after the incident.
Later, a case was registered against members of the Khoso community. Police detained a young man, two girls, and an elderly woman during the investigation.
Allegations of Prolonged Illegal Detention
The detainees were held for six days, despite no immediate charges against them. During this period, Asia Khoso alleged repeated sexual assault by six police officers.
Her statement triggered outrage among family members and local civil society groups. As a result, protests erupted in Thal demanding justice and accountability.
Human rights activists also submitted petitions seeking strict action against those responsible. The case has since drawn widespread condemnation across the district.
Court Orders Immediate Action
Taking judicial notice, the District and Sessions Judge ordered key parties to appear in court. The court directed the station house officer to present the victim and her parents on Tuesday.
The order signals a critical step toward judicial oversight of the investigation process. Legal observers believe the move could set an important precedent.
Meanwhile, authorities have assured that the case will proceed without interference. The court is expected to review custody records and investigative conduct.
Growing Demand for Police Accountability
The Jacobabad custodial rape case has renewed calls for systemic police reforms. Many citizens are demanding stronger safeguards for detainees, especially women.
As proceedings continue, public focus remains fixed on the courtโs next actions. The outcome may significantly impact trust in law enforcement institutions.
