The federal government has moved to reassess the recent increase in electricity prices by filing a formal review petition before the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). The move comes amid growing public concern over rising energy costs and aims to bring uniformity in electricity tariffs across the country.
The petition challenges the recently approved Rs1.79 per unit increase in the basic electricity tariff and calls for the same rate to be applied to all power distribution companies, including K-Electric. NEPRA is scheduled to hear the government’s request on January 12.
Government Challenges Rs1.79 Per Unit Tariff Increase
The review petition was submitted by the Power Division after NEPRA approved a hike in the average basic electricity tariff earlier this month. The increase was implemented from January 1 and applied to state-owned power distribution companies, commonly known as DISCOs.
According to officials, the federal government believes the revised tariff needs reconsideration due to its impact on consumers already burdened by inflation. The petition seeks a review of the basic tariff determination and urges NEPRA to reassess the structure approved for the ongoing financial period.
The government has argued that the tariff increase could further strain household budgets and industrial costs. Officials maintain that energy pricing should be fair, balanced, and aligned with broader economic realities.
The application specifically asks NEPRA to revisit its decision and evaluate whether the Rs1.79 per unit hike remains justified under current conditions.
Call for Uniform Electricity Tariff Across Pakistan
A key element of the review petition is the demand for a uniform electricity tariff across all distribution companies. The government wants NEPRA to apply the same tariff structure to K-Electric, which serves Karachi, as well as to all state-owned DISCOs operating in other regions.
Currently, electricity tariffs vary between K-Electric and government-run distribution companies due to differences in cost structures and regulatory frameworks. The federal government argues that this disparity creates inequality among consumers and leads to confusion.
By pushing for a uniform tariff, the government aims to ensure equal electricity pricing nationwide. Officials believe this step will promote transparency and improve public trust in the power sector.
The petition notes that consumers across Pakistan should pay similar rates for electricity, regardless of which distribution company supplies power in their area.
NEPRA Hearing Scheduled for January 12
NEPRA has officially scheduled a hearing on the government’s review petition for January 12. During the session, regulators will examine the arguments presented by the Power Division and consider feedback from stakeholders.
After the hearing, NEPRA will decide whether to revise the approved tariff or maintain the existing structure. Any changes to electricity rates will only take effect after an official notification is issued.
Energy sector observers say the outcome of the hearing could have a significant impact on consumers and businesses alike. A revision could provide temporary relief to electricity users, while rejection of the petition would keep current rates in place.
The government has indicated that it will continue engaging with NEPRA to find a sustainable solution for the power sector. Officials stress that affordability, efficiency, and uniform pricing remain key priorities in ongoing energy reforms.
